One of the world’s largest suppliers of athletic shoes and apparel, Nike has terminated its contract over Manny Pacquiao due to its horrible comments towards same sex marriage.

In an interview with Bilang Pilipino, the data-driven elections coverage by InterAksyon.com, News5, Bloomberg Philippines, Philippine Star, and Business World, Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao expressed his disapproval on the issue of same-sex marriage saying, “Woman was made for man, man was made for woman. It’s common sense. Will you see any animals where male is to male and female is to female? The animals are better. They know how to distinguish, male or female.

“If we approve male on male, female on female, then man is worse than animal.”

The petition saying ” Pacquiao’s expression of homophobia and bigotry disqualifies him from being honored, endorsed and sponsored by one of the world’s largest publicly-traded and owned athletic companies was signed by about 1500 netizens who find Pacquiao’s comment  as discrimination.

Nike has been a supporter of the LGBT Sports Coalition, the motivation to eliminate discrimination in sport. They also released their statements in regards to the said issue.

NIKE

“We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent; Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”

Earlier this week, Pacquiao sends his apologies due to outrageous reactions of the LGBT community, first to his Instagram page then to his Twitter account.

“I’m sorry for everyone who got hurt due to my comparison of gay people (homosexuals) to animals. It was my mistake. Please forgive me for those who I’ve hurt,” he said. “But this does not change my position against same sex marriage. That’s what I believe. My only mistake is comparing gay people to animals.” said Pacquiao in his Twitter account.

Even Filipino Gay celebrities such as Boy Abunda, a television host, publicist, Vice Ganda, actor and comedian who posted on his Twitter account the #PrayForMannyPacquiao in respond to the icon’s action and even Lea Salonga, musical theatre actress also expressed their vicious reaction to the Ring icon saying it is too early to decide whom to vote this coming election. Abunda and Ganda already claimed that they will not vote for the running Ring icon on the May 2016 Election.

We all have our own views in every issue but let us not forget that when expressing our thoughts, we have to consider others as well for we do not know their stand. We might not be aware that we are already violating them. Now, what is the Ring icon’s reaction to this?
